6 Mrs. Winfrey’s Social Studies Classes In American History students have just wrapped up learning about the world before the opening of the Atlantic with a focus on American, African, and European cultures and how they differed from one another prior to 1500. We are currently studying how Europeans changed life in the Americas. In Civics we have completed our study of citizenship and government in a democracy. Students have learned the different functions of the government, the process of naturalization, and the impact and importance of diver- sity in our country. We are now focusing on the roots of our democracy. This course of study will reveal the British legal influences on the American colonies, the colonists’ path to independence, and the first federal government. World History has been extremely busy. 6th graders have settled in nicely to their new middle school routine and quickly learning the ex- pectations of their new teachers. We have been able to enjoy experiencing what life was like for early humans and benefits of a settled life. We have also studied the advancements of early civilizations and are currently learning about some of the first empires to develop.
