2 Miss Sutton’s and Mrs. Matzen’s class is so excited to welcome our incoming first graders into our classroom community. We have had a busy start to the school year. This year we have had a strong focus on our science curriculum. Every Friday , we do our science rotation with the other two Lower Elementary classrooms for some fun filled science experiments. Children are natural observers. They are fascinated by the phenomenon found in the natural world. Maria Montessori recognized the young child’s need to observe and absorb in- formation about the world around them. In science, the children’s natural curiosity is stimulated through discovery, projects, and experiments, helping the children to draw their own conclusions. Next month, we will be visiting the Edison-Ford Winter Estates as an extension to our science curriculum. October is our Philanthro- py Month. We will be raising money and food items for Back Pack Kidz, a local non-profit who fights childhood hunger locally in our community. Philanthropy programs for young people provide authentic, positive opportunities for children to develop skills and knowledge that will make them better students and human beings. Teaching young children about philanthropy is also about demonstrating and teaching empathy. Empathy comes from imagining what life would be like in other circumstances and being humble for the privileges that one enjoys. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring!
